ISA allowances and the quiet mid-year review
How Northern Ireland households can use a mid-year check to avoid rushing subscriptions each March.
March ISA rushes create avoidable mistakes: money parked in cash when growth was the goal, or growth funds funded from money needed within two years. A mid-year review turns the allowance into a planned subscription rather than a deadline scramble.
We encourage clients to set a monthly standing order into the right wrapper as soon as surplus cash is clear after rent or mortgage, council tax, and an emergency buffer. The annual allowance then fills gradually.
Couples sometimes overlook whose name holds which ISA. Where income differs, using the lower-rate taxpayer's allowance for taxable interest outside ISAs, while filling Stocks & Shares ISAs for longer-term goals, can reduce friction at tax time.
Bring last year's ISA statements and a note of upcoming large spends — school fees, car replacement, home works. The review is short, but it stops March from becoming the only month you think about tax wrappers.
